Strength in Diversity: A Black Feminist Conference

A Black Feminist Conference is proposed for the weekend of July 4, 1984 in Portland, Oregon. This conference was conceived during a weekend workshop held in late January, 1983 in Eugene, Oregon. The workshop participants, who described themselves as 18 black women from diverse backgrounds (heterosexuals, bisexuals, students, prostitutes,

lesbians, professionals, construction

welfare workers,

mothers, professors,

The following is taken from their statement of purpose:

"We believe that the time has come to discuss issues relevant to Black women and to discuss and define Black Feminism as a viable force for affecting change. We want to address on local, regional, national, and international levels, the divisions that exist among Black women in order to work towards the goal of unification and to better enable us to have the power to effectively organize"
